Shawnee is one of the oldest towns in Johnson County, with roots tracing back to the Shawnee Methodist Mission established in 1831 and the surrounding settlement that grew up around it. The area was originally known as Gum Springs, and the town of Shawneetown was platted in 1856 and incorporated on August 10, 1856, making it the oldest incorporated community in Johnson County. The Shawnee Methodist Mission served as Johnson County’s first county seat before the seat was moved to Olathe in 1859.
