Lenexa traces its roots to the mid-19th century, growing up around the Shawnee Mission area and the railroad lines that crossed Johnson County. The community was officially incorporated as a city in 1907, taking its name from a local Shawnee figure named Na-Nex-Se. For much of its early history, Lenexa remained a small farming and railroad community.
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the population of Lenexa was 57,434, making it the ninth-most populous city in Kansas. The 2024 estimated population is approximately 60,000. The city spans approximately 34.4 square miles in northwestern Johnson County, bordered by Shawnee to the north, Olathe to the south, and Overland Park to the east, and is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
